Chapter 4: Telegram of Truth

The name Samuel in the Hebrew language has three meanings. It means “name of God”, or “to ask God”, and also “God has heard.”

These three meanings are very important to remember and reflect on as you read this chapter.

In 1843, a man named Samuel Morse built a telegraph system from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore, MD. On May 24, 1844, the first message, was sent. It bore only four words. “What hath God wrought?

Wrought means: “worked” or “already has been done.”

Samuel Morse started working on his version of the telegraph in 1832; he developed Morse Code (a set of sounds that corresponded to particular letters of the alphabet), in 1835, three years later. He was the man who had manifested the telegraph in the physical realm; and yet the first words he sent through it were asking what it was that God had already worked? Keep this and the following Bible verse in mind as you read this chapter.

”That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.” 1 Samuel 3:4 KJV

What is the “Telegram of Truth?” To put it quite simply it is when the Holy Spirit tells you the Word of God. If you don’t quite know what that means or even if you think that you do, don’t worry; we’re going to break it down and walk through it together. Let’s first start off by reading a verse from the Bible which is the Word of God. Let’s read the book of John, chapter one, and verse one.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 KJV

Here we can plainly see that the Word of God has been around since before the beginning; since it already was, when the beginning began. We also know right where it was, we don’t have to wonder about that, as we just read that it was with God. Now what was the Word? Well, as we just read, simply put, the Word is God.

So, now we know the basics about the Word; we know how long it has been a thing: forever, we know where it’s at: right there with God, and we also know what it is: the Word is God. But what does it do? What is the Word for? To begin to understand that we are going to look at another Bible verse. Let’s take a look at Isaiah, chapter fifty-five, and verse eleven.

“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11 KJV

By reading here in Isaiah it looks like the Word definitely has a job to do. A mission to accomplish, a goal to complete, and success is the only option. It looks like God uses the Word to get things done. Doesn’t it?

God sends his word to accomplish and manifest a desire of God into reality. He says something and it happens. Don’t believe me?

Have you ever felt the warmth of the sun shining on your skin? You are feeling the affects of four words of God, that were said so long ago; that we aren’t sure of exactly when they were said. But yet the mission in which the words were sent to accomplish, is still being completed to this very day; and will continue forever, because that is the will of God who sent the words.

So, God says something and it happens. We know that to be a fact. If you still have doubts, stand outside at noon-day and look up; or for you that be more wise, just read Genesis, chapter one, verse three. Now, we know that what God says: happens. What else has God said that’s happening right now?

I’m glad you asked, let’s read another Bible verse about the Word in Hebrews, chapter four, and verse twelve.

“For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 KJV

Let’s get a definition out of the way real quick, what is a soul? It is the mind, the will, and the emotions of a human being. For this is the very heart and soul of a person. We just read that the Word is able to divide the soul from the spirit. So obviously a person’s soul is a different thing than a person’s spirit. We also just read that the Word is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The word discern means “to distinguish, recognize, and perceive.” So the Word is both able to divide apart, to open up, and to understand the soul and the spirit of a person, and examine them both. So, if the soul is a person’s mind, their will, and their emotions; then this is what the Word is examining in the soul of a person. Our minds: which hold our thoughts, our wills: which hold our intents, and our emotions: which show how we truly feel on the inside.

It sounds like the Word knows exactly what we are thinking, what we are thinking about doing, and how we feel about doing it. What is it that the Word is discerning in your heart? If all of your personal thoughts, desires, and feelings were able to be read like a book. What would that book say? Would it say good things or would bad things be found written there?

Let’s look at another Bible verse, where Jesus spoke to his disciples, in the book of John, chapter six, and verse sixty-three.

“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63 KJV

To quicken means “to be made alive: to be raised from the dead.” We know that a human being consists of a soul and a spirit. These two things are alive in you and living inside of our bodies right now. Where did the life come from you ask?

Read the last verse again, the words that Jesus speaks unto us, they are spirit, and they are life. The life comes from the Word. Which is the Spirit that quickens, or makes alive that which is dead. Notice that the flesh doesn’t do anything but the spirit of a person is that in which gives them life.

What is your flesh? It’s your body, but it’s also your soul. Isn’t your heart the flesh? Notice how we say we can “feel” emotions, or when someone is brilliant in thinking we say, they really have a “brain”, or when someone is very loving, they have a “big heart”?

Life doesn’t come from the body, the flesh, or the heart; no more than it comes from the mind, the soul, or the emotions. Life comes from the spirit. Life comes from the Word of God, which is spirit and which is truth.

So, we have two things here inside the human being that are in direct opposition of one another. They are so polar opposite, you could say in fact that: it’s a life or death situation.

These two warring opponents are none other than the flesh and the spirit. Let’s look at some more words that God said, that are still happening. These we can find in the book of Proverbs, chapter eighteen, and verse twenty-one.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Proverbs 18:21 KJV

Are you starting to see all of this coming together yet? Death or we could say: the flesh, and life or we could say: the spirit, are in the power of the tongue or we could say: the words. And they that love it shall eat it’s fruit or we could say: you will get what each one produces.

It seems like words are very powerful. It sounds like words hold the very authority over life and death! Let me ask you something, what can death produce? What signs of life do we see in death? What signs of death do we see in life? The answer is nothing and none. They are completely one-hundred percent opposite of each other. Just like the flesh and the spirit.

Let’s read the book of Proverbs, chapter four, and verses twenty through twenty-three.

“My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear unto my saying. Let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:20-23 KJV

Did we just read that the Words of God are life and health to all of our flesh? Wait a minute, does that mean that the Word is not only life to my spirit, but also life to my flesh? Yes. Isn’t my flesh not only my body, but also my mind, my will, and my emotions? Yes. My very soul? Yes. Yes to all of those questions. The Word is life and health to all. Each and every aspect of you.

The Spirit, the soul, and the body. Or we could say: the Life, the mind, and the flesh.

You may be wondering why the word Telegram is used to describe this concept that I’m trying to show you. And it’s for a very specific reason. The word “Telegram” in English means: “A message sent by telegraph and then delivered in written or printed form.”

Stay with me here.

Let’s break down the word telegram to its root meaning. We have two words here the words “tele” and “gram.”

The word “Tele” in English means: “To or at a distance.”

The word “Tēle” in Greek means: “Far off.”

Now, let’s look at the word “gram.” We get it from the Greek word “Gramma” which has three meanings: “a small weight”, and “a thing written”, and “a letter of the alphabet.”

So, if we put the root meanings of these two words together, we get a statement that says: “A small weight, a thing written; to or at a distance, far off.”

Now that we know what a telegram is, we should also know what sends telegrams. As we just learned it’s called a telegraph.

Let’s look at the meaning of the word “telegraph” which in English means: “a system for transmitting messages from a distance along a wire, especially one creating signals by making and breaking an electrical connection.”

Now, we already know the root meaning of the word “Tele” so let us also look at the root meaning of the word “Graph” which in English means: “a diagram showing the relation between variable quantities, typically of two variables, each measured along one of a pair of axes at right angles.”

So, if we put together the root meanings of the words “Telegram”; and where they come from the “Telegraph.” Then we are left with a statement that paraphrased says: “A system for getting messages a long distance and a diagram showing the relation between two variables, each measured by a pair of axes at right angles; to or at a distance, far off.”

If this is starting to look like the “Telegram” is the Word of God to you, then you have understood that part. If the “Telegraph” is starting to sound like a way to deliver the Word of God and to see whether something is good or not, then you have understood prayer.

Think of the sunlight again, those four Words that were spoke by God, and how the light of it travels to or at a distance and far off. Remember the Word of God is quick and it quickens or brings life just like the sunlight is quick and brings life. That was something manifested in the physical realm by spiritual words sent out of the mouth of God.

Let’s talk about something else that was sent out of the mouth of God. For it was His very Word. The book of John, chapter three, and verse sixteen, says it best.

”For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 KJV

Let’s read one more passage that the Word Himself spoke, while we think about what we’ve just learned about the telegram and telegraph and how we have related them to hearing the Word of God told to us by the Holy Spirit, through prayer. Let’s read in the book of Matthew, chapter eleven, and verses twenty-eight through thirty.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 KJV

Does something being sent from far off to a distance, something that is written, something that is a small weight? Sound like it rings any bells with the verses we just read?

What about when you consider this thing called prayer is a system by which messages are sent and received over a great distance? What about if you think about the Bible as a diagram that is used for looking at the relationship between two things? Can you see the relation?

When the values of two things are compared by a pair of axes at right angles? Wait, that forms a cross doesn’t it. And a right angle is a sharp point, right? Like on a graph. Didn’t Jesus say the Word is sharp? And doesn’t the Word of God compare the values of two things as well: the values of the flesh and the values of the spirit?

The crossroads of two paths we could say. One goes one way and one goes the other, there’s a distinguishing and recognizing between the two. And they meet at the cross.

One more word to learn for this chapter I promise, I know it’s been a long one. The word Bible, is an acronym. It stands for:

BASIC-INSTRUCTIONS-BEFORE-LEAVING-EARTH

Did you see it? Keep reading, we go deeper. The Word of God is a “Telegram of Truth” that is well worth reading and understanding. We should all treasure it for the true gift that it is. I think the psalmist king David understood this; in closing this chapter let’s meditate on the following verses as they’re very important to the rest of our study. Read the book of Psalms, chapter one-hundred nineteen, verse ten, verse eleven, and verse one-hundred sixty-two.

”With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.” Psalm 119:10 KJV

”Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119:11 KJV

”I rejoice at thy word, As one that findeth great spoil.” Psalm 119:162 KJV

So, what happens when a human being doesn’t have the Word? Oh, how that is a most dark and perplexing thing to examine. Would you like to take a look at what that looks like with me? Read on if you dare to discover how the devil has deceived human beings into believing that there is power in death.

Satan has convinced many to discard the Words of God: and start dropping the drops of sin and of death into their spiritual water supply, which is their very life. This is what happens when the Telegram of Truth is ignored; and the way of life begins to be lost. When the Word of God is brought to you by the Holy Spirit, and then it is ignored; very soon will the destruction come. Remember the Titanic, and the horrifying fate of death and desolation it had? Remember, all they had to do was read the telegram; and do what it said to do.

You see, the people aboard the Titanic used a wireless telegraph, the Marconi radio, to call for help. But, only after their fate was sealed, did they actually want to use it. You see, they wanted to ignore the telegram before, they wanted to discard the telegraph as useless. What once was considered worthless to them, was now seen holding precious life within its proper use; but it was too late. Then, they tried crying out to anyone, anywhere, and to anything that was listening; one somber and unanimous message was telegraphed off into the cold and eerie darkness:

S.O.S – Save Our Souls!

God telegraphed back, and said:

I ALREADY DID.

The question of Samuel Morse, answered.
